3) Adjust inverter settings (hybrid & retrofit)
Once the Growatt smart meter is correctly connected and communication is established, you still need to configure the inverter. This depends on the type of installation: hybrid or retrofit.
You can adjust the settings via:
- The display of the inverter (OLED screen)
- The ShineTools app
- The online OSS portal
Note: Are you using a retrofit system and the option System retrofit is not available? Then a firmware update is required.
Via the inverter display
For hybrid and retrofit systems:
- Go to Set parameters
- Choose Advanced
- Enter the password
123 - Navigate to Power Sensor Meter
- Set this to On
Button operation:
- Press once = select
- Press twice = confirm
- Press three times = back
Step 2 (only for retrofit):
Then go to Set parameters > Work Mode and set it to System retrofit.
- See the image below for setting the work mode.
Via the ShineTools app
For hybrid systems:
- Add an electric meter via the settings menu
See the image below for the correct step.
Note:
- iOS: Electric meter
- Android: Meter
Also found under:
For retrofit systems:
- Add the meter (as mentioned above) and change the Work Mode to System retrofit
See the image below for setting retrofit via the app.
Via the OSS portal
For hybrid systems:
- Open the system in OSS
- Navigate to Monitoring > Device List
- Click the gear next to the relevant inverter
- Under Dynamometer add the electric meter
See the image below.
For retrofit systems:
- Follow the above steps to add the electric meter
- Also set the System Working Mode to System retrofit
See the image below for setting the retrofit mode in OSS.

-
Voltage RS485 A/B: between 3–5V → OK
Lower? Check or replace cable
Note: These settings are correct by default and usually do not need to be changed.
Common errors & solutions
Error 401 – RS485 communication problem
- Check RS485 A/B wiring and polarity
- Check COM address and baudrate in inverter and meter
- Measure voltage between RS485 A and B: must be 3–5V
- Check correct connection to COM port inverter (usually pin 5 & 6)
Incorrect power display
- CTs connected incorrectly? Arrow must point towards consumer (K → L)
- Error in phase sequence:
- Measure between L1 main switch and L1 meter
- 0V = correct, 400V = reversed → correct it
No data on monitoring portal
- Check if correct COM address and baudrate are set
- Check communication settings in inverter (Modbus active)
- Restart inverter after configuration
Configure Chint meters (DDSU666 & DTSU666)
Configure Eastron meters (SDM series)
