With peak shaving, you use energy from the battery to absorb high consumption peaks. This prevents the maximum capacity of the grid connection from being exceeded. For peak shaving, you need a Growatt hybrid inverter and a compatible battery.
This article explains how to set up peak shaving on a single Growatt inverter. Are you using multiple inverters within one installation? Then you set up peak shaving via the ShineSEM/Shinemaster-X or grohomemanager-X.
What is peak shaving?
Peak shaving literally means ‘flattening peaks’. The function is used to absorb short moments of high power consumption with power from the battery.
This is especially useful at locations where the grid connection can become temporarily overloaded. Think, for example, of a building where multiple heavy consumers are switched on simultaneously.
Without peak shaving, the full power at that moment is drawn from the electricity grid. With peak shaving, the battery supplies part of the required power so that the load on the grid connection remains below the set limit.
Example: a 3 x 25 A connection
A 3 x 25 A connection can theoretically deliver approximately 17.25 kW from the electricity grid.
The calculation is:
3 × 230 V × 25 A = 17,250 W
This corresponds to approximately 17.25 kW.
Suppose the consumption of the installation temporarily rises to 20 kW. This is more than the grid connection can/may deliver at that address.
With peak shaving, the battery can absorb the difference:
- installation consumption: 20 kW;
- maximum power from the grid: 17.25 kW;
- required power from the battery: 2.75 kW.
This way, the power drawn from the electricity grid remains below the set limit.
Note: always allow for a safety margin in practice. Do not automatically set the limit exactly equal to the theoretical maximum capacity of the connection.
What do you need?
To use peak shaving, you need at least:
- a Growatt hybrid inverter;
- a compatible Growatt battery;
- a proper connection with a smart meter or energy meter;
- access to the installation;
All Growatt inverter/battery systems support this function.
Setting up peak shaving
You can set up peak shaving via the OSS portal, ShinePhone app, and ShineTools app.
Via OSS
Step 1:
- Log in at https://oss.growatt.com/ with your installer account
- Navigate to the installation under "Monitoring & Management"
- "Device List"
- Search for the SN
- Click on the gear icon.
- This can also be done via "Plant List"
- Search the installation by plant name or account
- Double click on the plant
- Scroll down and select the inverter in the device list. Here too, click on the gear icon.
- Click on "Read" at the top to read the current data
- Navigate to "Peak Shaving Mode Settings"
- Click on "Enable" and set the import and export limits.
- Click "Yes" below and peak shaving is set up.
- It is also possible to reserve part of the battery for peak shaving; if desired, set this in "Reserved SOC for Peak Shaving enable" & "Reserved SOC for Peak Shaving"
Via ShinePhone
Open the ShinePhone app and log in with the account managing the installation.
Step 1: open the installation
- Open ShinePhone.
- Select the correct installation.
- Open the relevant Growatt inverter in the device list.
- Go to Settings, Parameter Settings
The exact name of the menu may vary depending on the ShinePhone version and inverter model.
Step 2: open the settings for peak shaving
Go to the menu for energy management or power control.
Look for a setting such as:
- Peak Shaving;
- Grid Import Limit;
- Load Peak Shaving;
- Import Power Limit.
Step 3: enable peak shaving
Set the function to Enable or On.
If requested, enter the installer password. Without installer rights, certain settings may not be changeable.

Step 4: check the battery settings
Check whether the battery has enough power and capacity available to absorb peaks.
Pay attention to settings such as:
- minimum state of charge of the battery;
- maximum discharge power;
- allowed discharge period;
- battery reserve;
- operating mode of the storage system.
Step 5: save the settings
Confirm the chosen values and save the settings.
Check whether peak shaving works
Test the operation at a moment when consumption exceeds the set limit.
When peak shaving works properly, the grid power remains around or below the set limit. The remaining power is supplied by the battery.
Peak shaving does not work: what can you check?
If the function does not work as expected, check the following points:
- is peak shaving actually enabled;
- is the smart meter or energy meter correctly connected;
- is the direction of energy measurement correct;
- is the battery available and sufficiently charged;
- is the battery allowed to discharge at that moment;
- is the maximum discharge power set high enough;
- is the set limit lower than the actual consumption;
- does the firmware used support this function;
- are the settings correctly saved;
- can the system deliver the total power requested.
Also check whether the meter measures the total import power of the entire installation. If the meter is placed incorrectly, the inverter cannot properly regulate the grid consumption.
Multiple Growatt Inverters - ShineSEM/Shinemaster
In an installation with multiple inverters, peak shaving is centrally set via the ShineSEM or ShineMaster-X.
The central controller measures and monitors the total power of the installation. It then distributes the required power control over the connected devices.
Do not set peak shaving separately on each inverter via ShinePhone in such an installation. This can lead to incorrect or conflicting control.
Setting up peak shaving on the ShineSEM/Shinemaster:
- Log in at https://oss.growatt.com/ with your installer account
- Navigate to the installation under "Monitoring & Management
- Click on "Plant List"
- Search the installation by plant name or account
- Double click on the plant
- Scroll down and select the datalogger in the device list.
- Then click next to the gear icon on "System settings" (see image below)
- Values for import and export can be set here under 'Feed power parameters' = Export
- 'Demand Management' = Import, here you also reserve part of the battery for peak shaving.
