Are you having trouble updating a Growatt inverter remotely? There is a good chance that the FTP connection is being blocked by the internet. By temporarily setting the datalogger as a DMZ device or ‘exposed host’, you allow updates to go through again. This only applies to the ShineLink X, ShineLAN X and older versions of the ShineMaster. The new ShineWiLAN-X2 no longer has this problem thanks to a secure HTTPS connection.
Why open the internet port?
With some inverters, firmware updates may not come through. For these products, the culprit can be a blocked FTP port. This is often the case with the following products:
Growatt ShineLink X
Growatt ShineLAN X
Older ShineMaster versions (pre-ShineMaster X)
->The Growatt ShineWiLAN-X2 works via HTTPS and does not have this problem. A great step forward in security and ease of use!
What is a DMZ and why does it work?
A DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is a network zone where a device is outside your router’s firewall. By placing your datalogger in the DMZ, you temporarily give it free rein to communicate with Growatt servers via FTP.
Note: this is not a permanent solution. Remove your device from the DMZ once the update is complete, for your network security. Another alternative would be to replace the logger with the new Growatt ShineWiLAN-X2.
Step-by-step: Setting the datalogger as a DMZ device
Your router interface may look slightly different, but generally it works like this:
Log in to your router
Open your browser and type your router’s IP address (usually something like192.168.1.1).Look for ‘DMZ’ or ‘Exposed Host’
This is usually under "Advanced settings", "Firewall" or "NAT".Enter the IP address of the datalogger
Note: this must be a fixed IP address. Check this in the DHCP overview if necessary.Save and restart your router if needed
That’s it!
🧠 Examples of search queries per router brand
Still unsure? Search online based on your model. For example:
"KPN Box 12 DMZ setup""TP-Link AC1200 DMZ configuration""Ziggo Connectbox Exposed Host"
📸 Pro tip: Take screenshots of your steps while setting up. Always handy if you want to revert something later!
