Everything you need to know about the Enphase IQ System Controller

The Enphase IQ System Controller is the smart heart for managing all energy flows in backup mode. The device switches lightning-fast (<120 ms) during power outages, controls the energy flows between grid, battery, and consumers, and works exclusively with the Enphase IQ Battery 5P. Even if the battery is empty, the Enphase microinverters continue to operate (minimum 10% charge required for IQ7). The system is suitable for both single-phase and three-phase (with FlexPhase) and also supports string inverters from other brands. What is the IQ System Controller?

The IQ System Controller automatically controls and measures how electricity is distributed within a home or building:

• Direct consumption of solar energy

• Storage in the battery

• Feed-in to the grid

• Switching to backup during grid failure

This controller forms the brain of the Enphase Energy System and is essential for backup power in combination with the IQ Battery 5P.

Good to know: The IQ System Controller works exclusively with the IQ Battery 5P and is not compatible with older Enphase battery models.

Main features and benefits

1. Lightning-fast backup

In case of power failure, the system automatically switches to backup in less than 120 milliseconds. This prevents device outages.

2. Complete energy control

The controller smartly and automatically manages the energy flows between solar panels, battery, grid, and users.

3. Compatible with other inverters

Besides Enphase IQ7 and IQ8 microinverters, the system also supports string inverters from other brands. Even if the battery is empty, the microinverters continue to operate. In total, 2 PV systems can be connected. 
📌 Note: IQ7 microinverters require at least 10% battery capacity in backup mode.

Flexible and scalable

• Up to 14 IQ Battery 5P batteries connectable

• Up to 80 A per phase

• Support for FlexPhase (3-phase applications)

• Compatible with grid structures: TN-C-S, TN-S and TT

• Earthing is mandatory

What is inside the controller?

The IQ System Controller includes standard:

• Enphase IQ Gateway

  • With production and consumption CTs (measurement sensors)

• Cell modem (Enphase Mobile Connect)

• Enphase communication adapter for IQ Battery 5P

• DIN rail for circuit breakers (not included)

• Q-relay is no longer necessary!

Technical specifications

Installation: how and where to mount it?

The IQ System Controller is designed for wall mounting, indoors or outdoors (IP55), provided it is in a protected location. Consider the following:

• Technical room

• Garage or storage room

• Exterior wall (under a canopy, in a cabinet, out of direct sunlight)

Correct installation circuit breakers must be installed at both the input and output of the system controller.
