- With the Enphase Enlighten app, IQ Microinverters + IQ Gateway Metered it is possible to disable solar power when prices are negative.
- First, set a dynamic energy tariff via the app.
- Then activate AI Optimisation to automatically respond to negative prices.
Negative electricity prices are becoming increasingly common. Great for large consumers, but less attractive if your solar panels feed electricity back at a price below zero. This will certainly become relevant when net metering ends in 2027 in the Netherlands. Fortunately, Enphase offers a smart solution to automatically respond to this.
In this article, we explain exactly how to automatically disable an Enphase system at negative energy prices — clear, practical and directly applicable.
When does this feature work?
You need the right hardware. Without this combination, it simply won’t work:
- Enphase IQ Microinverters
- Enphase IQ Gateway Metered + CT coils
If you don’t have this, you cannot use this functionality.

Step 1: Set a dynamic energy tariff
Before your system can respond to negative prices, it needs to know you have a dynamic contract.
Follow these steps in the Enphase App:
- Open the Enphase App
- Go to: Menu → Settings → Electricity Tariff
- Select: Add electricity import tariff
- Do the same for the export tariff.
- Here it is also possible to enter purchase costs and other parameters. This information can be found in your energy contract. (typically between 2 and 4 cents in the Netherlands)
- Confirm that you have a dynamic contract
- Accept the terms and click Continue
Step 2: Enable AI Optimisation
Now comes the most important step: automating the behaviour.
- Go to: Menu → Settings → Profile → Edit
- Select: AI Optimisation
- Click Apply
✅ Done. Your system will now automatically respond to price fluctuations.
What happens at negative electricity prices?
Although Enphase does not disclose all details (it remains partly a black box), the app does provide insight into the behaviour.
At negative prices, the system will typically:
- Reduce or stop feed-in
- Consume energy locally (if possible)
- Possibly store in a battery (if available)
This happens completely automatically — you don’t have to do anything.
Important remarks
Let’s be honest: this system is smart, but not perfectly predictable.
- You have no full control over the exact decisions
- It can take some time before settings take effect (+-6 hours)
Think of it as an optimisation algorithm, not a manual switch.
Why is this important right now?
With the increase of:
- Dynamic energy contracts
- Grid congestion
- Negative electricity prices
…smart energy management is becoming increasingly important.
These kinds of functionalities help installers and end users to:
- Protect yield
- Use energy more intelligently
- Be prepared for future market developments
Conclusion
Automatically disabling your Enphase solar panels at negative electricity prices is surprisingly simple:
- Set a dynamic tariff
- Activate AI Optimisation
- Done
The real power lies in the automation. Your system thinks along with you — without you having to intervene continuously.
