A single-split air conditioner consists of 1 indoor unit + 1 outdoor unit. The units are connected by copper pipes, wiring and a condensate drain. The electrical supply is usually connected to the outdoor unit, and from there extended to the indoor unit. A dedicated circuit is actually always desirable for safety and stability—and in many situations simply necessary.

Indoor unit (evaporator): hangs in the room and blows cooled/heated air.
Outdoor unit (condenser): is placed outside and exchanges heat with the outside air.
2) Connection between the two units
Between indoor and outdoor units there are always:
Refrigerant pipes (copper):
Liquid line + gas line
Always insulated (less loss, less condensation)
Wiring: power supply + communication between the units
Condensate drain: PVC or flexible hose
Preferably with natural slope
If necessary with a condensate pump

Placing the outdoor unit
On mounting rails (flat roof/ground level) or on wall brackets.
Pay attention to:
Sufficient free air
Vibration dampers to reduce noise
Accessibility for maintenance
Placing the indoor unit
Usually high on the wall
Free from obstacles for good air distribution
Not directly above a work/seating area
When should an air conditioner be on a dedicated circuit?
In practice: almost always do it. For safety and stability it is actually always desirable that an air conditioner is on a dedicated (separate) circuit, because it is a relatively heavy and long-lasting consumer.
A dedicated circuit is especially important (and often necessary) when:
it concerns a higher power rating (think of larger single-split or heavier multi-split systems)
the air conditioner would be on a circuit that already has many other consumers (kitchen appliances, washing machine/dryer, etc.)
there are long cable lengths or an installation where you want to prevent voltage drop
In short: a dedicated circuit prevents overload, reduces the chance of faults/failures and ensures more reliable operation.
Note: the exact implementation (circuit, breaker rating, type of residual current device, cable diameter) depends on the power and installation requirements of the specific brand/type and must be determined according to applicable standards by a qualified installer.
There is no strict requirement from which (x-wattage) an air conditioner installation must be powered via a dedicated circuit, but from 2000W power consumption it is strongly advised.
In practice, and also our advice, is always to place installations from 5.0kW on a dedicated circuit.
