Only inverters connected to a backup box (Growatt), SmartGuard (Huawei) or System Controller (Enphase) continue to operate during a power outage. These systems send a special signal that allows the inverter to safely remain in backup mode and continue producing.
If you have an inverter from another brand connected within such a system, then the behaviour of that inverter is unpredictable. It may go into fault mode or keep switching on and off continuously because it cannot offload its power. This is often unclear. Why? Because inverters need this signal in order to operate in backup mode. And let's be honest: Usually brand A does not design its products to work together with brand B.
Important to know: How another inverter without the signal will react is unclear and will vary per manufacturer/model.
Be well aware of this when combining brands within one backup system.
How does it work exactly?
During a short or prolonged power outage, a standard inverter automatically switches off. This is a mandatory safety measure, also called "anti-islanding". Without a stable grid reference point, an inverter may not supply power — this is to prevent risks for installers and emergency services.
Do you want your system to keep working during a power outage? Then a special backup system is required. Only inverters that:
Are connected to a backup box, and
Receive a signal that the power outage is being managed,
will continue to function. The backup box then ensures that its own ‘mini-grid’ is created (also called off-grid mode), in which the inverter can safely and independently continue producing.
Without that signal? Then it is unclear how the inverter will react.
What do you need to actually have backup?
If you want a working installation during a power outage, you need:
A suitable hybrid inverter,
A compatible backup system (such as a Growatt backup box (or HU inverter), Huawei SmartGuard or Enphase IQ System Controller)
And battery storage to temporarily buffer energy.
Note: not every inverter is suitable for this. So make sure to check with your supplier or view our range of storage solutions.
Summary:
| Situation | Does my inverter still work? |
|---|---|
| Power outage without backup box/inverter with built-in backup | ❌ No |
| Power outage with backup box/inverter with built-in backup | this is unclear. |
