The message AC V Outrange means that the inverter is measuring a grid voltage that falls outside the set limits. In the Netherlands, the permitted grid voltage is normally between 207 and 253 volts. Never adjust these values yourself! This can cause damage and, in the most extreme case, lead to fire.
The message usually does not indicate a fault with the inverter, but a high grid voltage caused, for example, by a lot of solar energy in the neighbourhood. In this article, you will read what this means and whether there are measures you can take.
What does AC V Outrange mean?
An inverter gives the message AC V Outrange when the measured grid voltage is above or below the set standard.
The standard grid voltage is:
230 V ± 10%: 207 V to 253 V
If the grid voltage rises above 253 volts, the inverter will automatically switch off. This prevents the system from further increasing the voltage and possibly causing damage to electronic equipment.
Due to the strong growth of solar panels and other forms of local energy generation, the voltage in some parts of the electricity grid can temporarily rise. This can especially occur at sunny times, when many installations are feeding back simultaneously.
If you consistently measure a voltage that is too high, contact the grid operator and indicate which voltage you have measured.
Other possible causes
A high grid voltage does not always have to come entirely from the electricity grid. Various factors within the installation can also influence the measurement.
Voltage difference between inverter and meter cupboard
Due to the resistance of the AC cable, the voltage at the inverter can be higher than in the meter cupboard. This is called voltage rise. In some situations, a thicker cable can help, for example by increasing from 2.5 mm² to 4 mm².
Always have the required cable cross-section checked based on the cable length, power, and the chosen installation method.
Contact resistance in the cabling
Poorly connected or insufficiently tightened connections can cause extra resistance. Therefore, check, among other things:
- the terminal strips;
- the connection of the AC cabling;
- the AC connector;
- other connections between the inverter and the main connection.
The measurement
The internal voltage sensor can also play a role. It may display an incorrect value. Therefore, always check this with a reliable external measurement.
AC V Outrange in a three-phase system
In a three-phase system, the error message can also occur due to incorrect wiring. In that case, check whether:
- there is no short circuit between the phases;
- the phases are connected correctly;
- the neutral and earth are not swapped.
No fault with the inverter
The message AC V Outrange means that the inverter measures an abnormal grid voltage. In most cases, the inverter itself is not faulty.
First check the voltage in the meter cupboard, the cabling, and all connections. If the grid voltage remains consistently too high, contact the grid operator.
If the problem occurs during sunny periods, then you will have to accept this.
